Fleece to Garment!
Alpaca is a beautiful luxurious fibre to wear. It is very warm, yet light weight, due to the fibre being hollow. It traps the air acting as an insulator. Alpaca has smaller scales on the fibre compared to sheep wool so therefore the prickle factor is a lot less and more comfortable to wear.
Maureen has been spinning and felting alpaca for over 10 years and has gained extensive knowledge on the different types of fleeces. Some fleeces are more suited to spinning and others more suitable for felting. When buying a fleece or animal, keep in mind every fleece is different. It is best to test it for felting quality by taking a small piece of fleece, wet with warm water, add soap and roll into a ball. If it felts quickly it is more suited to felting, where as a fleece that doesn't felt or takes longer to felt is more suitable for spinning. You don't want your precious hand spun garment turning into felt.
Spinning and felting is not all Maureen does! She processes and dyes her wool into beautiful bright colours and sells it at Markets and Fair's etc., along with garments and articles she makes. Scarves, wraps, vests, laptop covers and slippers are some of the items for sale. If you would like to buy some of these unique garments send her an email to [email protected]
